X Flea Control and Heartworm Prevention: Your Internet
Solution for flea and heartworm control.
Few problems can be more frustrating for you and your pet than an infestation
of fleas. The problem may be as simple as that constant annoying scratching
or as complex as a severe allergic reaction with secondary bacterial or
yeast infections. We (as veterinarians) understand that flea allergy is
a medical problem that requires the diagnostic skills, advice and treatment
by your own veterinarian. If your pet has odor, crusting or skin sores
associated with its flea problem, it is essential that you take your pet
to your veterinarian for treatment. Our purpose here is simply to educate
you about fleas and flea control and provide you with the safest and most
effective flea products available at incredible prices! Our hope is that
you leave our site armed with the information and products you need to
give your pets a life free of fleas and the problems that accompany them.
The flea that infests all of your dogs and cats is the common cat flea,
called Ctenocephalides felis. This pesky critter spends nearly all of
its time on your pet biting, consuming blood meals and laying eggs. These
eggs fall off your pet into your carpet, bedding, lawns or other areas.
Warm and moist conditions, like in your carpet, are ideal for the development
of these eggs into larvae. The flea larva resembles a maggot or tiny caterpillar
and feeds on organic debris in the environment. After a few days the larva
spins a cocoon where it develops into an adult flea. This process takes
three to six weeks after the eggs are laid. A female flea will lay up
to 30 eggs a day. You can see that the population will grow enormously
in just a short time if left unchecked. If you have a flea problem on
your pets you can be assured that there are eggs and larva in abundance
wherever they spend significant time.
Because of this complex life cycle, control of flea populations may
be focused on three zones. Zone 1 is the animal and our primary concern
in this zone is killing the fleas that have taken up residence there.
The best products we have found for this are Advantage® and now Revolution®.
Advantage® or Revolution® are applied once a month to your pet's skin,
and will kill 98-100% of the fleas within 12 hours and continues to kill
fleas for an entire month.
Zone 2 is your pet's inside environment and our aim here is to deal
with all the eggs and larvae that are present there. A quality product
that has been developed to control fleas in this Zone is Program®. This
tablet, given once a month to your dog or cat, prevents the development
of flea eggs into adult fleas. It does not kill adult fleas so should
not be used alone if you have a severe flea infestation. It is excellent
for preventing infestation after the adult fleas are killed. Another product
for use in Zone 2 is Flea Busters® Powder. This very safe product is applied
to your carpets where it dehydrates the flea eggs and larvae, preventing
their development into adults. One application lasts an entire year. This
product used in conjunction with Advantage® or Revolution® is an excellent
combination for totally eliminating an existing flea problem.
Zone 3 is the pet's' outside environment. The only way to adequately
deal with lawns and gardens is to use garden insecticides. Diazinon or
Dursban Granules are a convenient way to treat lawns if they are a significant
source of your flea problem. These are available at your Hardware or Yard
and Garden store. Be sure to follow all precautions on the labels. Most
of the time you can control your entire flea problem by concentrating
your efforts in Zones 1 and 2.
If ticks are a significant problem in your area then you need our Preventic®
collars. They control ticks for an entire three months and are safe to
use with any of our other products.
