What is a Tick?
Ticks belong to the Arachnid family of insects. They have eight legs, a hard outer shell and live off of the blood meals provided by their hosts. Ticks prefer mammals and birds for their hosts and can live on a particular organism for many days before becoming engorged and detaching itself.
Habitat
Ticks live in the tall brush and grasses found in the forested areas of the United States and surrounding countries. They fall out of their homes, unto a host when the unsuspecting animal brushes by. Even more scary, some ticks are reported to "stalk" potential victims by following along behind and awaiting their opportunity to attach.
Health Risks
Some ticks can carry dangerous diseases such as Lyme's disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. In November 2007, the California Department of Public Health issued a warning about the health consequences of encountering ticks even during the winter months in the warmer parts of the country.
