Heartgard heartworm prevention for Dogs and Cats
Heartgard and Heartgard Plus are prescription items. Heartgard and Heartgard Plus are chewable tablets that prevent HEARTWORM INFECTION. This product should be given once every thirty days during the time of year when mosquitoes are most active and potentially infect dogs and cats. In addition to heartworms, the monthly administration of Heartgard Plus provides effective treatment and control of both ROUNDWORMS and HOOKWORMS in dogs and cats. Heartgard Flea and Tick Control does not eliminate adult heartworm infections nor does it totally eradicate microfilariae (the larval stage located in the bloodstream). Therefore, all pets should be tested for an existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with Heartgard. Pets with a positive test need to be treated by your veterinarian. Heartgard effectively eliminates the tissue larval stage (spread by the mosquito) thus preventing further development into microfilariae and ultimately into adult heartworms. When using Heartgard for dogs or feline Heartgard, care should be taken to insure that your pet consumes the entire chewable dose. If any portion of the dose is lost or rejected then repeating the dose is recommended. Heartgard has shown a wide margin of safety at the recommended dosage level in dogs and cats. It is safe to use in pregnant or breeding females, breeding males, and in puppies and kittens over six weeks of age. It is also safe to use in Ivermectin sensitive collie breeds. It has been used concurrently with flea products such as Advantage and Program flea control, sprays, shampoos, collars, and dips with no adverse effects.
